Why use https?

HTTPS is a secure web protocol that adds a layer of security to the internet, preventing intruders from tampering with the communications between websites and users' browsers.  It also protects all communication and customer information, and legitimizes any site that uses it, making customers feel safer visiting your website.  Without HTTPS, traffic will be severely reduced, and a website is likely to be viewed as not being as trustworthy as others.  HTTPS counteracts security problems on the internet such as eavesdropping attacks or man-in-the-middle attacks.

In other words a website using HTTPS is like a restaurant displaying a "Pass" from the local food safety inspector: potential customers can trust that they can patronize the business without experiencing massively negative effects. And in this day and age, using HTTP is essentially like displaying a "Fail" food safety inspection sign: there's no guarantee that something terrible won't happen to a customer.
